Ebook - C++ By Dissection

Book Description
C++ by Dissection presents a thorough introduction to the programming process by carefully developing working programs to illuminate key features of the C++ programming language. This book presents the concepts of the programming process using the "dissection" method, the hallmark feature that has made Ira Pohl's C and Java books of the "By Dissection" series so popular. Dissection is a unique pedagogical tool first developed by the author to point out key features of program code. It is similar to a structured walk-through of the code, with the intention of explaining newly encountered programming elements and idioms as found in working code. The book includes a CD-ROM containing a compiler and an electronic version of the book that allows readers to search, take notes, and highlight right on their computer. Each chapter presents a number of carefully explained programs, which lead the reader in a holistic manner to ever-improving programming skills. Right from the start, the reader is introduced to complete programs, and at an early point in the book, the reader is introduced to writing functions as a major feature of structured programming. It contains four to seven small code dissections per chapter, and then each chapter culminates with a larger, extended code dissection. "Software Engineering" sections in each chapter reinforce sound software engineering skills. The book assumes no programming background and can be used by first-time computer users or by experienced programmers who are transitioning to C++.

Description From Library Journal
Gilorien is a digital artist so this is not your normal computer manual. While the tech stuff is all correct, the book's perspective is definitely "artistic," meaning cool comes before usability and often readability. This is not a book for novices; readers should have already mastered cascading style. A must for patrons interested in creating very strange, dynamic, animated images that download quckly without plugs-in. For larger collections.

Book - Thus Spoke Galileo: The Great Scientist's Ideas and Their Relevance to the Present Day

Book Description
You might know what is said about Galileo, but not many people know what Galileo himself actually said! His elusive and often misquoted discourse has resulted, over the years, in slurs against his name and reputation as a scientist. Let him speak then, so that he can bring to everyone's attention his message of reason, of intellectual honesty, and of free thinking. A message that, more than ever, is of great relevance in the rampant irrationality of the new millennium. The exposition begins with a blunt 'self-portrait'. A 'forgery' of course, based mainly on extracts from Galileo's writings and private letters; something he would never have dared, nor been allowed, to write for the public. The selection of writings offered includes many of the subjects that were closest to Galileo's heart and mind with lively commentary from both the literary, scientific, and historical viewpoints. For those who want to know the mathematics behind Galileo's theories, each chapter closes with a separate self contained summary. Thus Spoke Galileo will allow the reader to appreciate the work and the writing-style of a great scientist and author who had a tremendous influence on the modern world.
